Nexus Telecom Deploys First LTE Massive Load Test System at Tier 1 US Service Provider

June 11, 2010 - Zurich, Switzerland

In the wake of the recently announced LTE-related deal between AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent and the current surge of interest in Next Generation Networks (NGN), Nexus Telecom together with a major network switch manufacturer have agreed to integrate the multi-technology Nexus8610 flagship to simulate and test LTE mobile broadband technology on behalf of a tier 1 US-based telecom operator.

The Nexus8610 traffic simulation test solution is the system of choice for a major telecom equipment manufacturer and is currently used worldwide by several operators and manufacturers to help in complex, hybrid NGN trial cases with high loads. To protect commercial advantages, Nexus Telecom has agreed not to provide specific project details about the Manufacturer or the Customer. The equipment manufacturer was recently appointed by a tier 1 USbased telecom company to supply LTE technology, and was in need of a reliable partner as well as a highly flexible solution to help test traffic conditions and growing signaling complexity paving the way for commercial LTE deployment in 2011.

Martin Meisenburg, Nexus Telecom’s Director of the Testing Business Unit is clearly delighted with this challenge, stating, “This is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate Nexus8610's ability to meet such exacting demands while facilitating successful deployment of LTE technology for the customer.” Providing full scale extensive testing of such core networks, Nexus8610 was ideally suited in this configuration, simulating LTE Equipment for new services and protocols utilizing its unique signaling and bearer simulation capabilities. In addition to authentication, call establishment and bearer verification, the test system also enables network signaling redundancy tests to ensure the security of the network between different mobile technologies (3G, 4G interworking).

Difficult economic conditions and a race to offer new LTE customers a plethora of new services brings delivery challenges to Network Operators and LTE Switch Manufacturers. The equipment manufacturer opted for Nexus8610’s platform to integrate LTE into their existing core network switches because of Nexus8610's extensive test capabilities and fully scalable platform. As 4G networks emerge, powerful and flexible testing facilities must be in place to test new service provisioning technologies at the right time under the right performance conditions. Nexus8610’s proven scalable architecture operates at very high rates of complex transactions simulation to thoroughly verify the functioning of any LTE network elements under test. With this deployment, Nexus8610 simulated several thousand subscribers' calls in parallel, while handling astonishing loads of up to 1.5 Mio Busy Hour Call Attempts (BHCA) on a single interface board.

LTE is no revolution, but an evolution of the existing GSM technologies with which Nexus has long standing experience. Under the agreement, the equipment delivered had to be capable of easily and seamlessly evolving to LTE, while enabling the Telecom Provider to simply upgrade existing equipment and software. Nexus8610's future proof platform reduces the need to purchase and install new testing equipment. In addition to its predefined set of test cases (including LUP, Mobile Calls, SMS etc., which were successfully validated for the manufacturer), the solution also allows users to quickly and simply generate customized test cases. For this particular service, Nexus8610 was able to test the LTE technology by inserting an additional interface to the existing platform that included a wide set of new LTE features, including authentication, redundancy load sharing, SMS services, voice and data standard quality test measurements.

“To rapidly roll-out LTE interface simulation, we decided to scale up our existing Test Lab Equipment, leverage existing bearer and signaling testing capability, and together with the Nexus Telecom service delivery, take large steps to satisfy our major customer,” said Nexus Telecom's customer Test Lab Manager.
