GPRS and UMTS as wireless core technologies have been rapidly gaining market share.

However, due to their inherent complexity, comprehensive performance monitoring tools for these technologies are not as commonplace as one might wish.

Mobilkom Austria, an innovative mobile operator rapidly gaining market share, had been searching for an integrated performance reporting solution for the GPRS and UMTS parts of their core network and the associated services.

The parts of their network for which the customer needed reliable performance reports comprised the GPRS and UMTS parts of the network as well as the GSM voice backbone and the ATM and FR core.

As one of the first operators to offer UMTS services, Mobilkom Austria had high expectations on the reporting system. Thus, the choice of viable solutions was rather small. The performance reporting system was not only meant to be a source of information for the network operations center, but also had to be able to produce trending statistics and calculate KPIs as input for the network and capacity planning as well as executive management.

Another important requirement was flexibility in order to be able to adapt the performance reporting tool to future reporting environments, be able to customize the data base, if required, and feed raw data reports into a overlying reporting framework.

The NexusMETER Reporting Suite (NRS) and its successor NexusMETER4.2 was chosen as the ideal solution to help Telecom Austria reach their demanding business goals.

NexusMETER4.2 is a highly scalable, flexible, multi-domain, and multi-vendor network performance management and performance reporting solution that supports next-generation IP networks, UMTS-, GPRS-, and GSM-Wireless networks, as well as legacy ATM and FR networks. It delivers performance reports in near-real time for network and capacity planning purposes, as well as for use by the network operations center. It allows for analysis of pertinent QoS parameters and network utilization trends, as well as real-time service level verification via its build-in SLV tool. NexusMETER offers performance management support for carriers, service providers, and large enterprise networks.
